Ok… show of hands… who remembers the 1993 Meatloaf Rock Ballad “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)“??
Don’t be shy… Raise your hand!!
And what in the world does Meatloaf have to do with marketing…
Most people when they get started in business will take on almost any request that comes their way.
I did this too.
Back in the beginning in my concierge business, I didn’t know what I didn’t know.
I said yes to doing a resume ( I had NO Place doing a resume for someone ).
I took on large “data entry” projects for the $$.
I worked on Sundays when my clients asked.
I answered the phone for clients when I was away on vacation.
I said YES to almost everything …
But saying YES to other people (even when I didn’t want to) meant I was saying NO to me, my own personal time, my own boundaries.
Fast forward a few years into my business, I created a business I began to regret …
I was chasing dollars – not impact.
And from that moment on, I decided I needed to shift my business model.
I decided I would no longer:
– Take on data entry jobs.
– Work on weekends.
– Do “wedding support”.
– Be a dog walker.
– Do 1 hr. “gigs”.
– Do heavy “cleaning”.
– Do complex travel planning.
– Bend backward for last monte requests.
– Allow my clients to text me all hours of the night and day.
I decided …
I won’t do that …
It was then I started creating a Business that fit into MY life, instead of trying to fit my LIFE into my business.
This is my call to you my friend…
To ask yourself…
What ARE YOUR “non-negotiables”?
What are the things you will no longer do?
What are the jobs/tasks you will no longer say yes to?
As I get ready to head off to vacation in a few days, it’s a GRAND reminder of how far I’ve come…
Long gone are the days when I would sneak into the ladies’ room with my cell phone (while out in NYC with my kids for a family getaway) to answer a client’s frantic call because she couldn’t find her tax file.
Long gone are the days that I feel obligated to work on Saturdays, Sundays, or even holidays …
My life is so much better now that I’ve decided what I will or will NOT do to create a raving fan.
This is my assignment to you this week ( name ) …
Whether you’ve been in business for a decade and have been bending backward all these years, or you haven’t gotten your first client yet …
Remember that your right-fit clients will LOVE working WITH YOU even when you won’t do that…
