The Best Insurance For Your Business

One of the first questions people often have when starting a Concierge Business is: “What type of insurance do I need?” It’s one of the first basic things to consider as you’re planning your business that many people try to avoid or overlook. But if you truly want to set up a business that’s legit… this is something you can NOT overlook.

Ok – so now that we’ve taken care of basics, I want to teach you about what the “best insurance” is for your business, and it’s NOT what you think it is.

But for those who have a BIGGER vision, there’s another type of insurance you need. And that is an OPS manual!!

I know!! I likely threw you off a bit, didn’t I?

But here’s why it’s so important, ESPECIALLY if you have a team and eventually want to have a day off!

In January 2016, I found myself in a position where I had to drop everything and walk away from my business. My youngest son at the time, after arriving at the local Children’s Hospital, was rushed into surgery. Not just any kind of surgery, but lifesaving brain surgery. I’ll spare you all the details of what happened and our 3 weeks at CHOP. BUT the point of my story is that I HAD to walk away from my business. And having my OPS Manual in place, and having an amazing team at the time, KEPT my business doors open.

Later that year, when he was home and healthy again, I VOWED to hunker down and get all my systems in order. Having an OPS manual really IS the BEST Insurance you can have for your business.

And for those of you who are concerned or curious, we are completely blessed and grateful that he is 100% fine and healthy and for the most part a happy teen

Here are 5 reasons WHY you should make sure you have standard operating procedures.

1. Better communication

Well written SOPs clearly communicate responsibilities to employees and your team. When you’ve documented expectations and guidelines, your team is better equipped to do their jobs well!

2. Provide consistency of service

SOPs ensure that no matter what day it is or who is working, the tasks that keep your organization running effectively will be done the way you want them done. Not only do they keep things running behind the business smoothly, but they also keep your SERVICE delivery on brand at all times.

3. Increase productivity

When I was the “only” team member, I kept everything in my head, but I quickly realized that even though I “knew everything”, following a step by step system helped me do things much faster! My first “system” I created was “How to Onboard a Client”. Now, my team follows the process I created years ago which allows me to focus on new client generation and marketing.

4. Faster training

As your business continues to blossom and grow, you WILL need to bring on new team members. Documented processes make your training a smoother process. Many companies use such step by step procedures to help teach NEW team members how to perform specific tasks. Plus, when things hit the fan, (as they will at some point in time), your SOPs allow other employees to fill in at a moment’s notice.

5. Teach your methods

One of the biggest fears, when you bring on a team, is making sure other people do things “like you”. The reality is that you WILL have to allow them some creative play, but having an SOP teaches your team YOUR process and what the brand does for each and every client. Well written SOPs not only clearly outline the HOW of procedures, but also the WHY. When you communicate sound reasons why employees should perform tasks in a certain way, they’re more likely to do so.

How has this changed the way you see the future of your company?  I’d love your thoughts and feedback!
